Where in the world is Grandpa A.?

Where in the World is Grandpa A???

Oh to be a Travel Enthusiast….

Many folks like traveling and seeing the world. There are those that will never leave their home states, those who will never leave the US and those who will go just about anywhere.

I have one of each in my family. My husband and I love to travel and our children are lucky enough to be descendants Grandpa A. and have traveled some of the world at the tender ages of 12! It is Grandpa A's magic age for travels that he wishes to take each of his 7 grandchildren on. Something they will remember him by long after his life on earth, no doubt. 4 down and three to go...
The Big M as he is known around the relatives( my Husband is the Little M) has always had a passion for travel. As youngsters, little M ( aka Rotten 1) and the siblings, Rotten’s 2 and 3 and Thing’s 1and 2 traveled the US extensively. Yep, a couple of weeks in summer, Dad and his maps, 5 kids in the car, and Mom. The Triple A handbook was a necessity from which to find the cheapest 3-star hotel to stay in for the night. Oh, the stories I have heard over 22 years!

At any rate, “Dad” as I call him, seems to gravitate toward the third world countries as meccas for history and lack of western influence. Mom, on the other hand, doesn’t mind the hotels that don’t utilize mosquito nets to sleep.

Dad and my husband went to Vietnam in 1993, wherein the little side trip to Cambodia, Phnom Phen were nixed by the State Dept for the political unrest.

He has taken our oldest to India and pulled out all the amenity stops. However, they were not allowed to travel to the Kashmir because of unrest and a few bombings in 2003. He was not able to see the Bengal Tigers, either.
Dad has taken grandchild number 2 on the Trans Siberian Railroad with grandchild number 3. It was a good trip said my son.

Dad is going to be 71 in June. Last year, he traveled alone to Uganda to see silver-backed Gorillas and was the oldest participant in a class 6 whitewater rafting adventure. He biked and swam to get in shape because of the terrain they had to cover. We have the video!

A few weeks ago, he came back from Egypt with Mom and grandchild number 4. I hear it was a great trip.

Alas, Dad is relentless in his travel pursuits. Sometimes, I swear he has a secret death wish. So, bearing in mind that Dad loves the risk, the history and the backwardness of it all, guess where he is??? Well, I’m not gonna tell!!

Dad is a great journaler of his travels and sends emails of his advnetures when he can. He has sent several to Mom, the Rottens and Things. A little excerpt:

“The people are well dressed and well fed. There are more than enough cars, which in general are fairly new.. The cars are mostly compact and sub-compact. They have been made by France, Japan and Korea.

The food here is very good. The spicing is subtle and not much different to what I am used to.

This morning I climbed the four to five hundred foot mountain to reach the ruins of a fire temple built in the 2nd century AD. It was a rock and gravel hill with no vegetation. “

As a joke, my M sent an email to Mom…it probably made her freak a tad, but then, I am sure she belly laughed knowing her husband as she does.

One’s ability to deduce the location should be fairly easy after reading this. I LMAO and told M that this was one of the reasons I fell in love with him and it’s the truth.

Mom,

Let me know when Dad sends the email that sounds like this.......

We got a new guide today (yet another change that the Tour company failed to mention). His name is Achmed. Rough looking fellow but he and I seemed to hit it off. He commented on my travel vest and then showed me his and smiled. I thought his vest looked kind of bulky and cumbersome but it's probably some cultural thing so I just smiled back and told him it was very nice. He joined us up with another group of Westerners. Apparently we are taking a "side tour" later on this afternoon to some ancient caves up in the hills outside of town. He said they were filming a movie and we were to be participating in a "special scene". Kind of exiting! I inquired as to the group of "rough" looking men with beards, swords and head scarves gathering near our bus a few minutes ago. Achmed said that they were with the cast and that they are all very well know actors in the Middle East, kind of like our Bruce Willis, Clint Eastwood, and Robert Redfords. I will try to get some autographs during the bus ride. Well, I have to go now.

Love,

Big M

PETA? Cause I might!!!

They said what???

Uh-oh, people!! Hold on to your Kentucky Derby hats. The kooks from PETA are out in force and they want you to know that Gabriel Sanchez whipped that poor horse Eight Belles unmercifully, and caused it’s death. Why don’t they protest like this for human life at abortion clinics, Huh? I aks you? And, that is not a typo-aks. Why are they not giving the same attention to baby killers? Oh, what? You mean members of PETA think that’s okay? Of COURSE they do, of course. As long as they set the standards that they don’t have to live up to, it’s all O-kay. Silly me, I thought that human life was what we all valued more!! How could I be so shallow as to not protest when Eight Belle’s fell that it was the mean old trainer and rider who caused this? I am sad about what happened to the horse, no doubt. It was unbelievable. But for PETA to demand an investigation and the return of the prize money because SOMEBODY had to be at fault it just freaking insane. Sigh. The things that make you go, “hmmmm!”

Military Waivers

In light of my recent rant, I have a follow up in regard to the military waivers. My thought process was such that I believed it wasn't a bad thing.  I had seen several people who were offered jail or the military come out on the other side. Brian pointed out that the service is not meant to be a substitute for rehabbing the dregs of society. Mind, those were not his exact words, just the gist of it. He also stated that some of the people who were allowed to enter the service with a record, and then seperated from the service have begun to wreak havoc on local law enforcement, which has lead to several deaths.  My initial response was that I had not considered that such inidividuals would raise thier levels of criminality. It definitely got me thinking.
I realize that the reports out there as spun by the media make it reflect poorly on the military. The thing is that no system is any better than the next. But what the media fails to inform people of the facts or how the process works.  Naturally the word "felon" automatically puts anyone reading on the defensive and perceptions just go down from there. Let's take it up a notch.

Felonies are crimes committed when a person is 18 or older. As elementary as this sounds, examples of this would be burglary, grand theft, or possession of a controlled substance. (Cocaine is illegal, but also falls here)murder, rape. Misdemeanors are those crimes that are committed when one is under 18 and can include traffic violations, petit theft or battery. (I believe that age is used here for a guideline to the state  in regards to the charges and sentencing. This is how I understood it, when reading the article).

The military is quite thorough in it's investigative process when a potential recruit has admitted to being charged with something.  Many of the so-called "felons" have multiple traffic violations, a shoplifting charge or they got caught doing stupid pranks. The other side is, yes, some offenses are more serious and warrant the disqualifying from enlistment. After all, the Army is the biggest recruiter of troops military wide...and they don't want the slouch material.  Having said that, I can tell you several things.

1. The top 60% of recruits are high school graduates.
2. Use of the ASVAB (assessment test for the militarys job) is not a "dumbed down" test and filters out those who are not achievers in the short-run.
3. Use of character references and jobs held in the interim of the "act" is part of the screening process and is evaluated by a general officer for waivers.

Having looked at the actual report, the majority of the offenses are burglaries...to include grand theft or petit theft. The inuendo byt the media of murderers or rapists abounding in the services is BS. Just google it. It makes me sick to read how they spin the recruiting data. Don't misunderstand me.  I am not an advocate of letting killers reign free, but I do not like the idea that it reflects the whole military process.
Yes, several people with convictions of murder or rape have been allowed to enter into the service. The media has made that plainly clear without bothering to clarify what was behind it. It still begs the question, "Is the person a murderer in the sense it is portrayed?" is what I am asking. Or could it have been an auto accident where a kid drove drunk? This would be an error in judgement to be sure, and  ended tragically. Was there  a conviction but no served time? That does happen!  We don't know that answer. But the media doesn't bother to ask the questions that I am.
Nobody in their right mind would think that admitting a murderer or rapist to the military is a good thing. On the flip side, there are circumstances that the average American reading such reports are blind to.  It doesn't excuse behaviors, but rather pushes one to evaluate further.
In the grand scheme of things, here is the breakdown- The numbers are small percntage wise and probably have no effect on mission completion as you can see.
In 2006, the military met it's recruiting goals of 100%. The service exception was the Army who only met 92% of it's goal. Of those 180,450 recruits, 609 were waivered for misdemeanors or felonies.  That equates to about 0.33 % of the population being recruited were "felons."
In 2007, The military branches met or exceeded their goals, and though not represented in my stats, so did the reserve components.  Of the 181,171 recruits, 1007 were waivered for misdemeanors or felonies. This equates to 0.55% of the population in the military having participated in something criminal. How many never admit to drug use, or never got caught shoplifting or were never prosecuted for that date rape? Just playing Devil's advocate...

If prison has a rehabiltation program, how well does it work? In my up close and personal experience, it doesn't.    Rehabs in prison typically end before a person's time is served. Then what? Have they learned a job or a trade? Have they learned to be part of a team? Has anyone really given two shitts about their progress? Probably not. In my opinion, it is about survival.

Then we have the military which is not rehab, per se. . What some of these purported "felons" have never had is someone to care and so they adapt accordingly. Call me a bleeding heart on this, but maybe those crimes were about survival.  I know plenty of people who had opportunities to be educated and successful but wasted it...How are the people who never got caught shoplifting, dealing drugs,  raping soemeone or doing drugs any different than those with a record? Who tracks that? As a society, we walk the streets not knowing any of this...It is also a thought of mine that maturity does wonders for those youthful offenders. (I randomly choose 17-22 as the time that things really begin to click in terms of judgement and actions/consequences). This is merely a way that many people have found their way on life. They learn to be a part of a team and to follow the rules because someone else is putting faith in their ability to achieve. Who does that in prison? They learn that their failures become someone else's and if person wins, usually everybody does.  I truly believe this makes the difference in the desire for success and becoming somebody.  The taxpayer dollars are at work whether it's prison or the military. I still say I choose the military overall if need be.  In my opinion, the bad eggs won't make it past the first year. Those who want to change will be amongst their comrades and you'll never know them from the thug on the street. It works both ways doesn't it?  The choice given to offenders was nothing more than a chance to prove one's self, if you chose jail, it probably meant more failure. If the choice was to soldier, perhaps the light was already at  the end of the tunnel.
As an aside, my brother and husband have always said that if a person can make it out of their twenties, the rest would be cake. However, if it wasn't already in you to want to succeed, it wasn't going to happen, no mattter how many chances were handed out. I guess this is how I see the military and succeeding against the errors of youth.

Update: Brian noted below that the rate of a convicted felon commiting more crimes is fairly high. Perhaps my own words are biting me in my ever growing asss...but I didn't like the word rehab or mean to imply that the miltiary should do that. It is a place for some to start again and succeed, and maybe get something they never had-direction, self esteem, pride in serving a bigger purpose...(no throwing up Brian)!!

Coffee Talk....

Coffee Talk (aka Nee RANTS!!)

I don’ t want to drive everybody crazy…but this stuff has to get out of my head. These are things I have heard or read and I gotta give my two cents here.

Soooo, it’s time for a rant…I saw a report about the number of felons being able to enlist is on the rise for the Army and the Marines.

No, I don’t believe cold-blooded murderer should be allowed to enter into service. But, that old policy that was in place when I served- the one that let offenders choose jail or the military isn’t such a bad thing. It does turn a lot of people around. I am a firm believer that if a person doesn’t have it in them to goal set or make smart choices then the military is a good place to gain those skills. Does it turn everyone around? No. But I do believe in second chances. And if someone wants to wine about drug offenses? Rest-assured that those troops will be pisss tested more than your average employee anywhere. In four years I was tested 12 times and I was a model citizen upon enlisting. Go to the link here:

Next…groan. “Oh my goodness!”,in my best Judy Garland voice from the Wizard. So the Marine Marketing moguls have made some ads to attract women recruits. What is wrong with that? Drudge had it in his headlines and frankly, I think the Military branches should all make the same effort as the Marines are doing. Why? Because women can serve in many capacities and many want to, that’s why! Even the Daughters of Iraq and the Sisters of Fallujah when given something to believe in and stand up for are doing their part. It’s all good as long as you know it’s worth defending!

Okay, I am sick to death of the campaign bs and people who continue to close their eyes or bury their heads in the sand about Obama. This guy is as left as you can get without calling him Marx. Every day I hear the same radio ad by Obama and how we need unity so we can have Universal Health care and naïve (sorry, perhaps I should just call them dumb, uneducated sheeplike ) college students who say in the ad, “Obama is going to help those of us with big college loans…” And, every single time, I end up talking back to the ad…It took me ten years to apy back my loan at freaking 8%!!! It’s called working and sacrificing for what you want in life. This is not the “Vote for Obama so you think you’ll get a free ride 101” here people! It means more intrusion or your life, blood sweat and tears. WTF is wrong with people who believe this guy has a plan for change????

I can’t seem to find the ad…hang on…

Sigh…and in looking for the Obama ad, I found this sorry post on the Mother Jones blog…and I wanted (o)Vomit! This person is obviously a supporter of Obama and he called the debates “mis-moderated”? WTF does that really mean? Well, I would say that the candidates didn’t know the answers to the questions or they sidestepped. The next gem was this baby…William Ayers was never arrested for his bombing activities and since nobody died this makes Obamas associations with the “distinguished professor and education expert” okay as well!! Um, so what else can we let go by in terms of relativity and not TRUTH, you f-ing numbskulls at Mother Jones!!! Oh, yes, I remember now…if it’s okay to be associated with Ayers because he’s changed, and has openly asserted he wishes he could have bombed more, then it’s all good. Kinda like the Rev. Wright doesn’t really hate white people and Obama really put wax in his big dumbo floppies for 20 years!!! If you don’t want to raise your BP, avoid the link….you’ve been warned.

You’d think I’d be finished, huh? Not. Jimmuh Carter has really gotten more brash with his old senile self. Mr. ‘I thought I’d save the world’ but who still refuses to admit the part he played in our current situation. Of course, anybody with a thinking brain (translate Conservative with principles) is naturally offended by Carter’s visit for hugs and kisses with Hamas. Well, something I really liked is that Charlotte NC Rep. Sue Myrick is pushing for revoking Carter’s passport. Take away a person’s greatest privilege- To travel to a foreign land and be able to come back to the best Nation on the planet. Especially since he was apparently warned about going on this little jaunt by the State Dept. Here’s the link:

Have you seen this story anywhere in the MSM??? I didn’t think so….6.5 tons is a lotta cache…no pun intended. Remember boys and girls, nothing good is happening in Iraq!! Nothing! Praise the 2/24!!

GO Marines! (The Pinkos get Stinko'd!!)

Okay…this was absolutely a classic!! Thanks to American Thinker columnist Thomas Lifson for being there…Where, you ask? Ha! Double Ha!!

Well, it seems the Marines of Berkeley had a little demonstration of their own to “battle” the code pinky stinkies. Nope, I didn’t capitalize that, but you see the word Marine is capitalized. The pinkies were apparently busy saving the earth and celebrating green. Does anyone need a barf bag, or bucket?

They left behind some posters. (In my best of whiny), “Sorry we missed you boys, we are out saving the planet, War is not green”

I ask you, would anyone with a mind show up at the park where they were to be green? Let’s see the pinkos believe in saving the planet, global warming and that donating money to terrorists is a good thing. Is anyone “feeling” good about the pinkos saving the planet? Mmm, nope, not me. Is anyone but a leftist celebrating money given to terrorists? Why, oh why didn’t they feed some of the homeless children whose parents must surely be out on the street after buying houses they couldn’t afford? Oh, sorry, I guess THAT happened after they gave the money to the dark side. Okay, then why didn’t they invest that money somewhere to make more to insure all those poor people who have no health care? Oh, woe is me!! I cannot believe that such things are happening. Our own “pink patriots” denying their own citizens healthcare, food and shelter! What in God’s name (did I say His name out loud?)is happening to this Country? (swooning).

I’ll tell you what’s happening. The Marines don’t have to take it! Thanks to (gasp!) Freedom of speech which they hold near and dear not to just themselves, but for the rest of our Country. Contrary to the popular leftist belief that terrorism was a prop for the Bush administration, we and our Military understand that it is a threat and they are in the fight of our lives and theirs. But I digress.

The important thing here, is that some Marines decided to stand tall together….Semper Fi, to all.

The Rally on the Hill

Today was the day. General Petraeus testified. And as promised and thanks to Vets For Freedom, they really rallied. There were alot of vets out there supporting the "Let them Win" strategy in Iraq. It seems our Commanding General would also like that. Me, too. Here is a great blog where you can see a bit of rallying. The second link is to a video that is just killer and very appropo(sp?). Get your tissues out.

On to Victory!!

This weekend I took a special trip. Drove down to Ft. Bragg to support the Vets for Freedom's National Heroes Tour. And I met some of the guys who have served in Iraq, Afghanistan and other places who were speaking on the tour. There happened to be a female combat vet, too. Very cool.
The point of the tour is to get the message out to the rest of the world that WE need to WIN in Iraq. These fighters all know that it can be done. They have seen the progress, they KNOW!! But the rest of the world only swallows what the enemy from within wants them to. It preys on the apathetic  ignorance of the American population. What? Ah, the enemy from within...I can be very specific or I can be general. Murtha, Clinton, Kerry, Pelosi, Reid, Obama...and the rest of the Code Pinkies, Answer. You name them. They all suck and misrepresent what it means to live here in Republic where democracy serves all of us well.
Words spoken by warriors about freedom and sacrifice always choke me up. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I cannot hear the words and not be greatful that there are those who understand what I and many others do. Freedom is not free and the sacrifice of those that have come before me and the ones that have taken place since my life began should never be forgotten. NEVER.
You know, there's an old saying that I remember seeing graffitied on an overpass in Sanford, ME,1982, "Those who forget the past, are doomed to relive it." I felt it was so profound that I had to write it on a napkin as we drove past it and then on a folder I used for school. And every time I hear someone utter that the war was illegal, it was about oil, it was not Saddam we should have gone after, I cringe and think just that.  People who are less than informed are those who believe such crap. And, now what those people don't get is that we need to finish what we started and we need to do it to WIN. We can't leave the Iraqi people until we have left them with their stability, economy and security in tact. And, if you were to have heard what I did, or even read it somewhere on the 'net, you'd know that surely progress is being made in leaps and bounds.
People have endured many hardships over there. Some come back and can continue on. Some have issues that need to be worked out. But how can you not listen when someone tells you that if we leave there we deny the sacrifices our men and women have made in the name of freedom? How do you stomp on the graves of 4000 soldiers and leave their mission incomplete? Well, the real answer is that it is absolutely not acceptable. Not to those who spoke, not to me, a veteran who has not seen combat, not to anyone who does not take Freedom for granted. We are that Shining City on a Hill, like it or not. And we have the ability to give Iraq  the same things we enjoy with some adjustments. When women and children  in Iraq are being educated, infrastructures are being fixed and created, and the religious factions are working side by side to keep themselves safe to continue building their nation, we cannot and should not walk away.
On the eves of tesimony by General Petraeus in Washington, D.C.,Tuesday, April 8th,  these men and women will go to Congress to support Gen. Petraues' testimony of the successses we continue to make in Iraq and Afghanistan and to say that we should not leave our missions  incomplete.
To Tom Parks, Steve Russell, Kate Norley, and Jeremiah Workman, Pete Hegseth, Jim Hanson(aka Uncle Jimbo from Blackfive.net) Thanks for doing what you do. And, Thank you for your service...Hooah! Keep up the good fight.

The Survey said....

The Survey Said...

Okay, so I was returning from a wake and as I get in the door, the phone rings. I hear an automated message about an "election survey" that will take 3 minutes. I think to myself that  I'll give it a whirl even if is going on 800pm. So the questions were asked if  I voted for President, Governor,  Lt. Governor today, who would I vote for. I answered them. In the question for Senator, we have Dole and someone else.I said I would vote for Dole. Next question: Are you registered a Republican, or unaffiliated? I purposely chose unafilliated. Next question: Which of these issues is most important to you? I didn't get to pick the three that I always tell people should be a rule of thumb if they are "apolitical"(groan!). The issues were Iraq, education, taxes, economy and jobs, morals and values. I picked Iraq licketysplit. Because I figured it was a biased poll. The next question I got confirmed my answer....Are you a woman? I get why they do surveys. So they can figure out who they need to target. But I resent that it is not a fair representation if they are only going to use it to say who will be the favored ones in this state. Am I just being paranoid? I hung up after the 'woman' question because I was ticked off. I hate surveys unless they are for a radio station and if you are going to torture me at length, please feel free to pay me for my valuable evening time. What would you guys have done?

You're a What?!!!

You’re a What????

Okay. My daughter is a sophomore and taking civics. The teacher, also a softball coach, gave this quiz. I need some help (and signs, Jam Apple, signs!) I want to know what the heck this person is teaching my kid. I understand that as young ‘uns they have lots of sympathy. But this kid is all about what is right and fair and gets it. That’s why in discussing it with my daughter, I was miffed. I could not find an exact quiz match, but maybe that is because teach there changed it to suit. Why would I think that? MMM, government skools. So, I found this one in the link below.

I have to believe this is the same one. But, some words have been changed to be politically correct, in my opinion. Which of course, you know really frosts me!! So here goes with the online quiz. Underneath in red, the actual kid quiz words. In red parentheses, I say “okay” if the statement is not changed, or add what the statement was on the kid quiz. The answers you could pick were: agree, maybe, disagree.

Personal Issues

Government should not censor speech, press, media or Internet (used the word control)

Military service should be voluntary. There should be no draft (okay)

There should be no laws regarding sex for consenting adults ( instead of this, there was “Leave the decision of abortion to the individual.”)

Repeal laws prohibiting adult possession and use of drugs. (drug laws do more hare than good, repeal them.)

There should be no National ID card. (people should be free to come and go across the borders, live and work where they choose) (a doozy!!)

Economic Issues

End "corporate welfare." No government handouts to business (Businesses and farms should operate without government subsidies.)

End government barriers to international free trade. (People are better off with free trade than with tariffs.)

Let people control their own retirement; privatize Social Security (okay)

Replace government welfare with private charity. (We should end taxes. Pay with user fees.)

Cut taxes and government spending by 50% or more. (Minimum wage laws cause unemployment. Repeal them)

My assumptions could be off on the last two.. But the scary thing is the wording and use of political correctness made my daughter’s answers label her as a “statist!!” And, naturally, that made me cringe. So…I took the quiz online, and was labeled a conservative.

I also took the kid answers and plugged them in and the label tells me my daughter is a centrist. What I am curious to understand is what defined the word “conservative” in class. My daughter said she answered based on that definition. That could also be a little white lie because she didn’t want to admit that her views were different from mine…I am very vehement in my convictions and not intimidating at all. J

Sigh, It frustrates the daylights out of me. Everyday, I get closer and closer home schooling all of my kids, except that I suck in math. Many of you may have seen this quiz…I tend to ignore that kind of stuff. So, if you haven’t, and even though we know we’re conservatives, just do it!

Taking it Up a Notch

At age 40, I was probably in the best physical shape of my adult life. What I mean by that is, that I was consciously working at it and not letting my great family genetics carry the load. I woke up two days after 9/11, the baby barely two, and I knew this was it for me. I went and bought a treadmill, got the weights dusted off and proceeded to train. I was going to lose about 5 pounds, and get supremely cut. Uh-huh. I was looking good.

By now you must be wondering, ”Has Nee lost her mind, is she going to have a love fest with herself and her physique?” Nah. Just going to give some pointers about doing it right…because I have seen enough misinformation out there and, IT.TICKS. ME. OFF.

My sister is currently taking a weight loss product that is the only one approved by the FDA. I don’t advertise for them. My sister is a walker. Apparently, the stuff comes with a nutrition plan and she is religious about it. She’s dropping weight reasonably quickly. Go, Annie, go! Sort of.

I am not a supplement person. I believe that doing it naturally is the best way.

Anyhow, the website of the product my sister is using has a support forum that I think is doing a disservice to it’s clients. There are registered dieticians who answer questions and the folks cheer each other for support. But I noticed some things that were unacceptable, at least to me. I’ll get to that.

As a personal trainer, health educator and consultant, I have a pretty good working knowledge of nutrition and exercise and how to give someone the body they want…I am currently working on “the self!” In the last year, with many changes taking place, I gained some weight and literally quit working out at all. My nutrition didn’t change, but everything else did. Alas, I have hired a trainer to work with because I could not motivate myself. (Boo-hiss!)

Everyone knows the basics to weight loss…Make better food choices, eat less and DO exercise. As a trainer, I believe there are a few things people should know about themselves before they embark on using supplements, surgeries or fad diets.

RMR

Do you know what your resting metabolic rate is? The resting metabolic rate is that amount of calories one needs to literally just breathe. There are plenty of electronic calculators out there to give you an idea…but the best way is to pay money for the test to be done officially. I did it because I had gained 8 pounds in five months and there were no other pathophysiologic causes other than stress. In a fasting state, one is hooked up to a heart rate monitor, has a mask on their face. One must be completely still and as relaxed as possible breathing in/out through the mouth only. Your nose is pinched because of the way the mask is made, so you get some help. This may go on for as little as 15 minutes or longer depending on how easy it is for one to remain still and breathe right. The tech said mine was picture perfect. Unfortunately, for someone my age, the RMR should be at around 1200 Kcals or better just to take up space…mine, sadly was not. (groan!!) No matter, now I knew that in relation to that, I could exercise and raise that, and eventually boost my metabolism.

I mention that my nutrition didn’t change. It did not. What changed was that I was not eating regularly and stopped exercising. So, when I was not being good about consuming, the body would go into survival mode and hold onto the fat for it’s energy, thus making it impossible to maintain my old weight. Scratching your head and thinking, ”WTF is survival mode, I’m eating for crying out loud and getting healthier with every bite…” Well, I’ll tell you.

We nutrition and exercise peeps learn about this thing called the Krebs cycle. This is the ATP or energy converting mechanism in your body. Glucose is broken down as can be proteins and fats for energy. In exercise the body typically has enough energy (aka glycogen stores) for you to bust hump for 20 minutes. If you don’t have that, and you keep on exercising, the body begins to eat your muscle and then your fat. Yep, it’s true, the body doesn’t always live off the fat of the land, first. I know, curse that, hey? So, when your metabolism slows and you quit eating decent meals in a regulatory fashion…your body says, “Hey dumbasss! You aren’t feeding me right, and now look what I’m gonna do for you.” You pork out, plain and simple.

Aw c’mon, you say…Well, your body needs the right fuel to efficiently burn the calories you take in. If it’s not getting that, then the survival mode is turned on.

The easiest example of this would be the many women who skip lunch to exercise. They spend thirty or forty minutes on a stair master and feel great. When they are done, they don’t eat. Not very smart. What they have done by not having a snack before the exercise is to use the glycogen stores for energy within twenty minutes. Their bodies needed to restore the energy and they ignored it. Then, they are robbing themselves of muscle tissue because fat is the last to be utilized for energy for the remaining time. If they choose not to eat a lunch, then they have not replenished their energy stores. How many times have you heard that 5-6 meals a day or 3 meals with decent snacks is the way to feed your metabolism and burn the calories? C’mon, you know you have heard at least one man or woman say this ,” I’ve worked out everyday and cut back my eating, but I’m still fat.” That is why.

MAP

The next thing is a Metabolic Assessment Profile.A metabolic assessment profile is something that will measure at what point during exercise you begin to burn carbohydrates and fat. No fasting this time! You’re gonna be taxed physically. You will wear a Heart rate monitor, and the mask again. And this time you will be on a treadmill, and breathing in/out of your mouth again. The idea is to get you in to a zone with the speed of the treadmill and some inclines. Eventually, you will find out what your anaerobic threshold is (anaerobic meaning without oxygen)…this is heart rate number that tells you your body is about to burn that fat!! Woo-hoo! I now know that in order to lower my body fat percentage and increase lean body mass muscle tissue) that I have to keep my heart rate up around 175 for a good 30 minutes if I want to lean out. And do it every day!! In six weeks I have gained two pounds of lean body mass and dropped my BFP. Again , there are many places that can automatically give you these numbers by plugging weight, height, etc. into a formula. I know from using said formulas before that I should probably be mooing in the pasture because it told me that at 137 beats per minute I was burning fat!! NOT. I was only in what is known as zone two…carb-burning.

The Forum

I was ticked because in this particular forum, a woman said she hardly ate, was only taking in 1200 Kcals a day and did 30k steps on a treadmill. It is possible that this woman was lying, but if she wasn’t, there is no way that a diet pill and that amount of caloric intake that her body could NOT go into survival mode. The number of steps to walk a mile is roughly 2200. No one explained to her what was happening to her body and that she really should consume more and walk less. She didn’t say if she lost weight, and I am assuming she didn’t. It is the lean body mass after all that raises the metabolic rate to burn calories and keeps you mobile. No need to lose it any sooner as it depletes itself with age! Right now, according to the formulas that are used to calculate body age, I have improved from a 45 yo (I’m 43)physical age, to 36!! And I am just a couple of points away from my VO2 max/ anaerobic threshold category of “elite”. Numbers don’t really mean much, but I do get to see my improvements. An actual goal I have would be to have a resting heart rate of 40. That would mean that my heart and it’s oxygenating abilities would really be kick asss! (Lance Armstrong, better be looking in the rearview!!)

The bottom line is that the more information you have, the more tools you can wield to make becoming fit and trim a lifestyle choice that is an easy one. It is not hard to eat well and exercise. Once ya got the body, the maintenance can be simple. if it changes or slows, then you will know how to kick it up a notch.

Everyone has different body types. It is easier than you think to kick your lazy asss, er, um, metabolism up a notch.

So let’s think about this, now.

Exercise is good. We need to have energy to exercise. We need to replace the expended energy, too. Then our bodies don’t shift into survival mode. Exercise and then eat a good snack within thirty minutes. Be routine if you can. And regular with your meals. Make smart choices. Find an activity or exercise that you like, so you don’t dread getting out there and doing it. The more lean body mass, the more efficiently your body will burn the calories you consume. You’ll also go from feeling slug-like to a super man or woman state. The endorphins and serotonins really take your state of mind up and out of the “I hate my body” doldrums…not to mention you’ll look better, maybe lower the ‘ol Triglycerides, cholesterol and BP. Woo-hoo!!

If anybody would like to get these kinds of fitness measures, go to the local gym and inquire. It is spendy, but well worth it to track your progress.

Have I inspired you, yet? Personal individual counseling is available! J

Mommy, what's a Freegan?

I came across something and I am trying to figure out how to be nice about someone else’s beliefs and what they are doing to support such ideals. Have you ever heard of the word “freegan”?

Nope, it isn’t slang for the word frigging, freaking, or fukking, uh-uh. It is a word that describes a person who forages through trash for free, vegan type foods that are tossed away daily by grocery stores and bakeries, mainly.

Hence, Free and -gans because they only forage for vegetables, fruits, breads and expired boxed goods. Not all freegans are vegans, however.

Surprised, shocked, and grossed out? Me, too. I mean, I have never heard of this before. Even more mind-blowing is that the people doing it are well-educated, successful people who decided that there is too much consumerism and waste happening in the world today and they have committed themselves to a life of minimalism, to include eating free and wasted goods by going on “Trash” field trips. Many are not employed and see money as bad!!

What constitutes a ‘field’ trip? Apparently, take along some plastic grocery sacks, maybe some disposable gloves and get the pep talk that consists of telling fellow freegans that they should wash any fruits and veggies when they get home, inspect any packaging for holes, and no eating while collecting food.!! Yikes! I’m sorry, but the thought of standing n the dark of night, with flashlight in hand to pick through the waste of a store makes me cringe.

For freegans, the imperative toward owning inanimate objects and purchasing ancillary services only feeds the beast of capitalist economics. They believe that housing is a right not a privilege, so instead of paying rents or mortgages, freegans tend to squat in abandoned buildings or live with groups of friends. I don’t like this at all. Ask a South African how they feel when squatters take over their private property and the government does absolutely nothing. Freegans also believe those who embrace capitalism are, in fact destroying the environment, the animals, and even humans. So, basically, the world. And the way they connect the dots to get to the point of being minimalist or by rejecting capitalism can be astounding. What do I mean?

Because of the pollution emitted from cars and other kinds of transportation freegans prefer to skate, hitchhike, walk or cycle. Nothing wrong with using self-moded means to get around, right? But I think they forgot that gas is used to transport the vegetables, or that a cow’s farting methane contributes to the “ruin” of the environment!! (Damn cows! Hold on a second…oops! I just contributed, too. Excu-use me!)

Or how about that cows are ‘hurt’ because we milk or slaughter them? Never mind good old vitamin D or the fact protein is an essential nutrient for strong bones and brain growth in children. (Do you think freegans have children in this awful world of over consumption and capitalism?) And, me, well, I truly love a nice freezing cold glass of milk a good petite filet and I work hard for the money (so hard for the money, do-do-do-do) to be able to enjoy that! I’m sorry, but why would cows be on the earth if not for that?

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 96 billion pounds of food are thrown away each year, making up 12 percent of the trash produced in the United States. Because of federal and state regulations for restaurants and grocery stores, expiration dates often come before the food actually spoils. This is perplexing to me- the regulatory issues. If food is going to be thrown away why can it not be donated to a homeless shelter or sold at a discount instead of tossing it? Why? Well, lawsuits, of course! (Tort reform, tort reform, personal responsibility, no entitlements!)

Freeganism is a spot-on practical illustration of Ayn Rand's term "stolen concept". Freegans are denying that which allows them to be! These people are living off the “spoils” (literally!!) of a free market system. This is indeed hypocritical. Should the free market system collapse, so would their ability to re-use the values of that system. Amazing, isn’t it?

The movement has been around since the 90’s, apparently. In researchin this article, I found several references that dated to 1997.

But, you see, we cannot go back to be cavemen who were hunters and gatherers. We cannot go back in time and become any less technologically advanced…Could we consume less and use the things we own more efficiently? Absolutely. I ask myself how is it that a person wakes up one day and has such a revelation about the consumerism and waste? What does giving up a 6 figure income and foraging through garbage actually do to help those who have less? (as somewhere in a liberal mind, it is about humanity and saving the planet) Why not take all that money and really do something to help those less fortunate or to change the policy to use the waste efficiently? Why not put it to tangible use instead of becoming a bit of a recluse against societal progress, government and the free market? Because, it makes them feel good. More power to them if that is truly what makes them tick. Not me. I will not apologize for wanting, even needing to consume. This is human nature and if it weren’t meant to be this way, we as a planet would have imploded long ago. I can be more frugal in many ways, but I will never embrace freegan ideals. I can’t. I’m a capitalist, after all!

Sounding Off!!!

Okay, I have had it with some media shitt, so I am sounding off.!!!

First on the list is Mayor (I forgot I was a Democrat, so I could talk shitt) Bloomberg

The Headline:

Bloomberg Rips Government Over Failing Economy

NYC Mayor: U.S. Resembling A 'Third-World Country'

The balance sheets are what he was referring to. And then we have this gem.

"Nobody wants to sit there and say, 'Well there's no easy solution,"' Bloomberg said. "They want to send out a check to everybody to stimulate the economy. I suppose it won't hurt the economy but it's in many senses like giving a drink to an alcoholic."

Well, WTF is up with that, Mayor? This is the root of all entitlement programs You Democrats want to “give the people.” You know, make it an even playing field, even if they don’t want to work for it and ride my income coat tails. Bush has been pandering to you asshats for 8 years expanding the entitlements, and NOW you complain? FY. While I’m at it, don’t forget your proverbial ball wearing Senator who wanted to give sanctuary and licenses to the I-2s… (Illegal immigrants--I want to write I-squared with the number two, but it ain’t happening). Indeed, let’s just keep sucking our economy dry because the entitlement programs let the lazy assses in this Country sit back like snobs and not take on the jobs that the I-2s will do. I am so damned sick and tired of those people thinking that because they get money from the government that it exempts them from doing manual labor. Stop the hand-outs and see how fast they get off their candy asses so they can eat. And if they don’t, TFB for them. I am just done with the victim mindset. Get the F*** over it and try some blood, sweat and tears like the rest of us.

And, for the record, the economy is only as bad as your budget…so get over that, Paul Krugman and every other damn democrat who WANTS this Country to become a communist nation. It won’t happen as long as there is breath in me.

Second…The ABC Show Good Morning America

Oh, Mike Adams is sure to write a column on this…Eve Ensler asked Jane Fonda to do a part in her “Vagina Monologues.” The Act name is the vulgar word for a woman’s reproductive “font” if you will. She said the word C***, live on the air. Yeah, so what, it was the name of the act. But in NOT apologizing for Fonda’s using the word , Ensler said, “ We want to make that word beautiful again.” Holy fu**ing shitt batman!

"Finally, I hope you won’t mind that I sent a note to Jane Fonda telling her about your case. I told her how we’ll use it to empower men who are victims of matriarchal oppression. I wanted her to put her two c*nts in. Frankly, I c*nt wait to hear back from her."

When has that word ever been beautiful??? It is demeaning, nasty and abhorrent when it comes the description of a woman’s genitalia. I mean, give ME a frigging break, here.!!! The people reading this who know me, know I love a good f-bomb and I have used plenty in my rant this morning, but make the c word beautiful again??? Is there no end to the Femi-Nazi quest of men hating? That IS how I see it.

Those FN women wanted to be equal to men…and now, what do they have? Nothing but those nice fat little careers, sports cars and fancy clothes. Was it worth giving up your ability to let a man be a man to take care of yourself and not have children? Are you pining away for what you don’t have? Maybe you should have thought just a little harder. So, they are blaming men for their own proverbial balls and the fact that sex had become just an act. Isn’t that what they wanted? Independence and free love, no strings? Well, I hope those male bashing bittches are happy, because it isn’t about the men. Now FN, get out the mirror and see if you can solve the problem.

Sound off finished.

Write it in???

                                              Will your vote be counted?

Okay, since I said I am considering writing in my vote and I want it to be counted, here’s the deal. I live in NC. And there are rules that apply. (Damn rules). So here we go and here’s hoping I can steer some of you in the right direction,.

First and foremost: The Primary for NC is to be held May 6th, 2008.

Any person on the primary ballot who is defeated is not allowed to be written in for the General Election for the same office that year.

An example: Edwards is out, (buuutt, just for shitts and grins)…Edwards is defeated in the primary run for office of President in NC then, he cannot be written in to be voted for as President and the vote cannot be counted.

There are several requirements for a General Election and the writing in of a candidate.

Under NC GS(general statute) 163-123:

1. File a declaration of intent with the State Board of Elections and it must contain :

(a) Applicant's name,

(b) Applicant's residential address,

(c) Declaration of applicant's intent to be a write-in candidate,

(d) Title of the office sought,

(e) Date of the election,

(f) Date of the declaration,

(g) Applicant's signature.

2. Apparently, one must also file a petition for the write-in candidate and should contain the following at the top of the page in bold and Capital letters, mind- and on all subsequent pages  to be signed:

"THE UNDERSIGNED REGISTERED VOTERS IN __________ COUNTY HEREBY PETITION ON BEHALF OF AS A WRITE-IN CANDIDATE IN THE NEXT GENERAL ELECTION. THE UNDERSIGNED HEREBY PETITION THAT SUBJECT CANDIDATE BE PLACED ON THE LIST OF QUALIFIED WRITE-IN CANDIDATES WHOSE VOTES ARE TO BE COUNTED AND RECORDED IN ACCORDANCE WITH G.S. 163-123."

The GS does specify that for state, local or district levels, there must be a certain number of eligible voters signatures on the petition, but doesn’t specify the office of President in the General election, unless I just don’t get legal jargon. The minimum number of voters was listed as 100.

I have put in a call to the NC State Board of Elections to ask my questions, and if necessary for my vote to be counted, I will go ahead and declare, petition for signers and then get my way. Nothing worth doing is ever easy, but somehow the personal satisfaction I will have is enough. I got it in me to show the GOP how much they should be embracing the suck…Actions equal consequences, and this will be mine. I may only be one, but at least I can say I didn’t sit out or cast a suicide vote. I don't know about other states, if you write it in, it may not be counted and that would REALLY suck.

Who would have thought??

An aside, here. Sort of. At my son’s scout meeting we actually had a great discussion (the Parents) about the choices facing us in the elections. A couple of recurring things that I noticed:

**People are deathly afraid of Hilary Care. I personally don’t think it’s gonna really get off the ground should she make it to office.

**The Supreme Court Justices are a huge concern as we have seen in the junior blogging circuit…

**All of us would not be voting for McCain, or at least, that is what was said. The statement was made that we would “die” a slower death if he were elected as opposed to Obama.

**The other thing, that has totally escaped me-- Several of the guys, ( I was the only woman) mentioned that there was no way either Obama or Hitlary would withdraw from Iraq at this point of “success” because once in office, neither of them would want to be “losers.” Of course, should that happen, they could always blame Bush.

**Lastly, can someone educate me on Super Delegates, and Brokered Convention? I have heard these things bandied about several times and I don’t understand.

So what say you, my friends? Agree, disagree? New thoughts or just tired of it all?

PS- The election board has not returned my call and I wrote this yesterday…..
